Do you remember the whole “DADT ruled unconstitutional” thing? Well, it’s back in the news. Why?
Well, if you remember, the Judge was accepting argument from both sides, the Government and the Log Cabin Republicans, on whether or not to stay the ruling or to make it immediately enforcable. Today, she ruled.
She stated that the government must immediately stop discharging servicemen and women who are discovered to be GLBT.
Now. according to the “mysterious they”, the Obama Administration is under no requirement to do so. I guess because it’s military and she’s civilian? But, here is where the rubber meets the road. If Obama really is interested in equality, he will not appeal, he will not push it off onto Congress. He will comply fully and end the practice. However, if he’s more worried about getting re-elected in 2012, he may say ‘Well, Congress implemented DADT, so Congress should rescind it’. That’s where I’ll call malarkey. DADT is a slap in the face to the Founding Fathers by saying that some are good enough to serve the country, while others are not. It is a slap in the face to the GLBT, saying that we are second class citizens, that our patriotism is cut-rate, and that while we are fully taxed, we are not fully protected, and it is a slap in the face to every single American, saying your worth is determined by who you love.
